Chapter Ten

Tick and Aurora watched eight-year-old Alena work her way across the floor dodging poles that rose out of the floor swinging a padded arm at her. All of the arms were on level eight and adjusted to her height; the going was slow but methodical. She took her time and completed the challenge in fifteen minutes. Tick and Aurora cheered and rushed over to hug her. The twins joined them celebrating and Alena was glowing from the praise.

Tac looked up at Tick and said, “Please let me try! Pleeeese!”

“When you have a griffin, you’ll begin your training Tac. That should happen next year.”

Olivia snorted and Tick turned to her, “What does that mean?”

“You’re never too young to train to do anything, Daddy. You’ve always told Sissy that training for life never ends. Have you not been honest?”

Tick chuckled, “Always calling me out, aren’t you?” Olivia shrugged. Tick turned to Tac and said, “So you want to try it, huh?” Tac nodded so hard Aurora was surprised he didn’t hurt his neck. “Alright, be my guest and step out on the floor.”

Aurora immediately remarked, “You need to reduce the level, Tick.”

“No, no! He needs to know what he’s working to accomplish.” Tick turned the dial to ten, waved his hand toward the padded floor, and said, “In the future you need to be careful of what you ask for, you might get it.”

Tac smiled and stood on the edge of the floor. Aurora whispered something to Tick and Tac turned around and said in a serious tone, “BE QUIET! I NEED TO HEAR THE FLOOR!” Aurora laughed and moved her fingers over her mouth like she was closing a zipper.

Tac stared at the floor and Tick said, “Any day now!” Tac turned his head and looked at him with a scowl. He then turned and began running across the floor at full speed. He would instantly dodge an arm and then roll to the right or left to avoid another but was back on his feet in an instant continuing to run. In less than thirty seconds, he arrived at the other side of the floor.

Olivia clapped her hands and cheered as she ran out on the floor to hug her brother. Tick shouted, “STOP!” The floor was still active since Tac had not been hit by an arm. An arm shot out of the floor and Olivia dodged it and rolled to the left. She slowed her speed slightly and continued to run toward her brother. In less than a minute, she arrived on the other side of the floor and Tac grabbed her and they danced in a circle as they cheered. Tick stared at them with an open mouth and then suddenly ran out on the floor at full speed. He made it two thirds of the way across before an arm hit him in the abdomen, dropping him to the floor.

Everyone ran out on the floor when Tick stayed down and surrounded him. Tick held up a hand and said, “Give me a moment to catch my breath.
